Prerequisites

Fire Program Prerequisites:

  • Minimum 18 years of age
  • High School Diploma, GED, or post-secondary equivalent to grade 12 level. Students who do not meet this requirement may also be accepted – please contact us for alternative application options.
  • A valid Standard First Aid Certificate
  • CPR Level C or Health Care Provider (Heart & Stroke Foundation’s Standard First Aid + CPR/AED Level C, St. John’s Ambulance, or Canadian Red Cross) minimum requirement – higher qualifications are also accepted (eg. Advanced First Aid, ACP practice permit, etc.)
  • Alberta Student Number
  • A completed Medical Form complete and signed by a physician within 6 months of program start date.
  • Resume and two letters of character reference

Fire Program Physical Requirements:

Fire Fighting is a career that demands high physical fitness – students must be physically healthy and fit.

  • Applicants must present a medical form stating that they are approved and able to participate in this physically demanding program.
  • Facial hair must be trimmed or shaved – excessive facial hair may impair the use of breathing apparatuses.

Students with English as a second language:

  • Students who speak English as a second language are required to complete the online Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB)English proficiency exam prior to applying to the EMR program.
  • This exam is completed independently, and results must be forward to admissions@emergencyed.ca to supplement your application.
